Censorship of Music Essay -- social issues
Censorship of Music In today's society, all types of music artists are expressing their views, opinions and feelings in their songs about what they see and what they know. This is on of the great things about this country, the freedom to express yourself. It is not fair, nor is it constitutional that music should be censored in anyway. It is not only rap music trying to be censored it is in all types of music. They are taking away their rights and it isn't fair. As reported in the New York Times. "Wall-Mart CD standards are Changing Pop Music", Wal-Mart and other large department stores sell CD's by your favorite artists which are not what your favorite artists originally created. Some retailers refuse to carry CDs with "Parental Advisory Stickers", a few also go as far as to make it known to labels and artists that if the CD comes to their shelves with a "dirty" word, a "controversial" cover, or an "explicit" lyric it will not be allowed on the shelves. Some of the artists include Nirvana, Beck, John Mellencamp and the list goes on. (Internet ultratnet) The most recent case involving Wal-Mart and censorship, was the new Sheryl Crow album. A song on the album which lashes the company for selling guns that end up in the wrong hands as caused the company to ban the album in stores. (Schruers 64) Delores Tucker, William Bennett, Senator Joseph Lieberman, and Senator Sam Nunn held a press conference in Washington D.C. The message: censor obscene music and censor "pro-drug lyrics". These censors announced their plan to pressure major record companies to discontinue production of what they called "obscene" music and music which contains " blatantly pro-drug lyrics. All of the CDs targeted as "obscene" already carry RIAA Parental Advisory Labels. Parents are already provided with the information they need if they choose to monitor their children's musical selections. Discontinuing production of this music takes the freedom of expression away form everyone- musicians and fans of every age. (Internet ultranet) The increas ing controversy surrounding rap music, with its rough-edged lyrics about sex and violence, has prompted two very different responses from black oriented radio stations in New York and Los Angeles. Two stations WBLS New York and KACE in Los Angeles, have announced they wont play the roughest and most offensive songs. A third station WPWR opted... ... of their age. I always tell them that if you want to keep listening to the music that you enjoy, starting today you have to learn to fight back. If you don't fight for your own freedom, no one is going to give it to you". (Internet xnet). Morello believes and I agree, speech and expression are being shackled in the U.S., and she puts much of the blame on the current political climate. " Cenosorship is coming down now harder then it has before. " she says. " Look at the Congress we have, trying to take funds away from the National Endowment for the arts, trying to kill public television. They must be living in the Dark Ages." (Internet xnet). After reaserching music censorship and supporting anti-censorship organizations, I realize that there is much wrok to be done to get free speech. There will always be someone or some group to stand aganist what you believe. I think the only way to really gain full freedom of speech is to fight and not give up. I think that the more people realize that rights are being violated, the more people will support the anit-censorship groups. I believe that people who do support these groups should really get involved. It is the only way we can win.

Frosts Life as a Poet Essay -- essays research papers fc
Robert Frostââ¬â¢s Life as a Poet Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco, California on March 26 of 1974 and died in Boston, Massachusetts on January 29 of 1963. Though he did not truly start publishing poems until age thirty-nine, Frost obtained four Pulitzer prizes in his writing career and was deemed one of the greatest twentieth century poets. His pastoral writing and skilled use of meter and rhythm has captured the attention of readerââ¬â¢s and critics for decades (Academic American, 345). Frost was very fond of nature and the beauty of things around him and illustrated this in many of his poems. A reviewer stated that Frost was ââ¬Å"always occupied with the complicated task of simply being sincereâ⬠(Faggen, I). This statement describes the writer well in the sense that Frostââ¬â¢s works are very full of emotion. His use of the English language and the fact that he often seemed to be holding a little something back in his writing has made him one of the most celebrated American writers ever. Frostââ¬â¢s early years in life were very adverse. Frostââ¬â¢s father, who named the boy after his idle Robert E. Lee, met his wife in Pennsylvania while they were both teaching at Bucknell Academy. William Prescott Frost Jr. and his wife Isabelle Moodie married and moved to San Francisco where Robert was born. William Frost was a Harvard graduate and was the city editor for the San Francisco Daily Evening Post. Frostââ¬â¢s family moved a good amount and his father, who had serious drinking problems, died of tuberculosis in 1885 and left his mother and younger sister with very little money after burial expenses. The Frostââ¬â¢s returned east to live with the paternal grandparents, but soon moved to Amherst, New Hampshire to stay with his great-aunt. Shortly after this the family returned to Lawrence, Mass. where Robert was placed in school as a third grader. Frost graduated here as co-valedictorian with Elinor White. Though he was moved often and had troubles with his fat her in his young life, Frost still maintained good grades and two years before he graduated Frost had ââ¬Å"La Noche Tristeâ⬠printed in the high school bulletin. This was his first printed poem. Two years later Frost graduated and read a speech titled ââ¬Å"A Monument to After-Thought Unveiledâ⬠(Faggen, xi). This marked the end of Frostââ¬â¢s childhood and the beginning of his adulthood and the many decisions that came with it. His triumphs and defeats are immortalized in his writings and his great accomplishment will be seen in them for as long as his poems endure. Works Cited Arp, Thomas and Greg Johnson. Literature. Creative Toys Company
The role of social system in the case was highly important because in the organization, The Creative Toys Company, all the people in it and their relationships to one another are mutually interdependent. This was evident in the case wherein in the transportation department, the eight members divided their work among themselves in order produce more toys. Thus, at the beginning, their department surpassed all other departments in production for 12 months. The impact on productivity is that the employees had a dysfunctional effect on the organization because they were unwilling to use their talents and were resistant to to organizational changes. This was based on the case wherein the physical layout of the department did not facilitate efficient traffic flow to and from the other departments hence the plant manager decided to call in consultants to determine a way production could be increased without physical expansion and the suggestion was for the rearrangement of the work areas in the transportation department. Two months after the change was implemented, the departmentââ¬â¢s productivity was declining hence it seemed they didnââ¬â¢t want to do good with their job because they were unsatisfied with the organizational change. In terms of the organizationââ¬â¢s communication, it seems that the organization was not able to convey the key elements of the firmââ¬â¢s culture and vividly reinforce the values of the organization. This was based on the case wherein the plant manager tried to convey to Mr. Wilson the problem of the department but instead of keeping an open mind and listening to the needs of his employees, he just disregarded it. By not listening to his employees, Mr. Wilson did not give them the chance to have individualization which led the employees to rebel since they didnââ¬â¢t have a strong impact or influence on the organization. An informal organization is defined as a network of personal and social relationships (alliances, cliques, friendships) that arise as p eople associate with other people in a work environment. In the case, this informal organization caused the issue that Mr. Wilson was trying to figure out. A system could be considered as the heart of an organization that makes its different departments function well just like organs, but it should never be forgotten that it is still the humans that run the system. Without humans, the system of a company or an organization, no matter how technologically advanced it is, will be useless. As shown in the case, Mr. Wilson even hired special consultants to analyse and change the business process but in the end, they found out that the problem they were looking for was not in the system but actually in the people running the system, which were the employees. This is because the employees had an informal organization brought about by a single reason which is salary related. The informal organization is their way of voicing out their concern to the management and making their presence felt. Their somehow rebellious act caused a dysfunctional effect to the company that forced the management to look for the current issue affecting the companyââ¬â¢s performance. There are a lot of factors that motivate people. Some motivations are just because of a deadline, some because of the rewards they get for doing a great job, or just the self fulfilment involved in the whole process of doing the job. Motivation also contributes a lot in the quality of output or work and plays a good role in maximizing a personââ¬â¢s potential. Making a person feel important, and giving him the proper respect and value as a person will make him feel motivated to do better and maintain this image that you have of him especially if you are the boss. Although, giving a person a reason not to get motivated can have its toll on you as a leader and as part of an organization that is output oriented. Lack of motivation will transform a personââ¬â¢s point of view towards work, lack of motivation will turn every task into a burden instead of an opportunity to strive and do better. In the case, Mr. Wilson probably was a nice boss due to the fact that his workers has stayed with him for at least 2 years. The problem comes in when there is an issue involving all workers that affect their motivation to work, which is their low salary. No matter how much changes to the system Mr. Wilson does, the results stayed the same because this one issue has caused the workers to not strive to do better anymore. They lacked the motivation to prove their worth to Mr. Wilson by actually trying to do more than what is expected of them.

An action research paper Essay
Floridaââ¬â¢s Comprehensive Assessment Test or FCAT is an important segment of Floridaââ¬â¢s general scheme to augment the accomplishments of students through the implementation of more advanced education standards. In general, the FCAT is given to individual students ranging from Grades 3 to 11 and includes two primary parts. The first part, or the Criterion-Referenced Tests (CRT), is used to measure the chosen standards in the subjects of Mathematics, Science, reading as well as writing which are essentially extracted from the Sunshine State Standards (SSS) while the second part, the Norm-Referenced Tests (NRT), measures the functioning of the student learner in terms of reading and Mathematics in the context of established national norms. With this in mind, the resulting FCAT scores can be used in order to determine the strong and weak points of the students who took up the test in connection to their classroom and overall performance in their school. While FCAT serves as a tool in measuring and determining the level of achievement of students in connection to the Sunshine State Standards, it also provides a better comprehension and analysis for the academic accomplishments of students by scrutinizing the manifold segments of evidence found in the tests such as the FCAT scores that are accumulated over time. This is one of the primary reasons why students undertake the test. This is especially helpful to teachers as it allows them a substantial amount of information with regard to the individual performance of the students. By monitoring the FCAT test results and by comparing these results with the results from previous years, the knowledge of the students can be increased specifically in the field of science. This can be particularly achieved through the initiative of identifying the weak and strong areas of the students in relation to the FCAT test results and by adjusting lesson plans accordingly. With an interest in improving the knowledge of students and preparing them for the fitting career choice or goals in the coming years, every effort to instill desires for these future successes must be addressed so that the students will understand the significance of creating a firm and stable knowledge base. One of the essential goals among various learning institutions, especially among teachers, is to make the students know more and appreciate the content of the courses or school curriculum. This furthers their rational thinking and assists them in obtaining learning skills that do not simply fade away with human forgetfulness. Further, the primary goal of teaching the students in order for them to pass the FCAT appears to be a wrong approach to education in general. On the other hand, teaching students with the curriculum mandated by the state reinforced with additional self-reliance for research and gathering data from a wide array of sources can make them surpass the FCAT and other scholarly tests with flying colors. Although the research will probably create more questions than solutions, nevertheless the research is substantial in terms of providing another means in uplifting the quality of education received by students. LITERATURE REVIEW FCAT is considered as the cornerstone of the statewide educational appraisal and accountability scheme. The primary purpose behind the FCAT is to obtain two types of information. First is the that individual students, parents as well as teachers need the data derived from FCAT in order to supply information concerning student mastery of educational skills. Further, the public requires the data obtained from FCAT in order to comprehend the ââ¬Å"educational healthâ⬠of learners and to deem schools as well as districts responsible for progress (ââ¬Å"FCAT Fact Sheet,â⬠2005). In essence, FCAT determines the knowledge of the students and their comprehension in terms of writing and reading, mathematics as well as science content that are defined in the ââ¬Å"Sunshine State Standardsâ⬠which holds a direct connection with the questions placed in the FCAT. Table 1 Percent of Text Type on FCAT Reading Grade Level Literary Text Informational Text 3 60% 40%. 4 50% 50% 5 50% 50% 6 50% 50% 7 40% 60% 8 40% 60% 9 30% 70% 10 30% 70% For the most part, the Sunshine State Standards refer to the competencies as well as the skills that the students in the area of Florida should be capable of learning from a young age. This is defined by education specialists, practicing classroom lecturers, business individuals as well as the citizens of Florida. FCAT for writing is usually conducted during February while the test for science and mathematics as well as reading is conducted during March. However, the exact testing dates may vary depending on the date. Students can also prepare for the test and achieve successful results by means of learning from the significant contents of the Sunshine State Standards through lectures from teachers. Benefits can also be obtained by the students from the available teaching resources that are free and are easy to use such as FCAT Explorer which is readily available over the internet through the Florida Department of Education. This can also be obtained from the existing reviews of the sample test booklets for the FCAT. The FACT Handscoring Process starts with the students from grades 3 to 11 who take the test every spring. The grading scale of the test is determined and developed by the teachers and experts in Florida with the use of the answers of previous students. After training college graduates to precisely score, the set of evaluators are required to pass a qualifying exam which contains scoring with a minimum of 80 percent accuracy in order to initiate scoring. Before differences in scoring are addressed and settled by the director of the scoring process, a pair of evaluators score every question by their own where the agreement of the evaluators run at an average of 97 percent. About 24 educators who have been trained have scanned every question by the time the FCAT handscoring procedure is finalized. Finally, the scores of the students are handed over to both teachers and the parents of the students. Dating back to 1998, the public schools in Florida have already been administered with the FCAT where the results of the FCAT determine the foundation for the accountability scheme of the respective school. Further, the FCAT for Grade 10 has eventually been transformed into the graduation test for high school students. Ever since the FCAT has been implemented, concerns have been raised over the scheme, most of which come from both the education sector and the public. Oftentimes, these concerns are founded on myths rather than facts. In order to measure the portions of the SSS used by the State Board of Education, the FACT test elements were made, and that these elements in the test are at first written by commercial testing contractors which include CTB/McGraw-Hill as well as the Harcourt Educational Measurement. Yet these elements are placed under review and the revision coming from the staff of the Department of Education. Also included are teachers who work in the FCAT Test Development Center and its headquarters located in Leon County School District as well as practicing teachers in classrooms in Florida schools and supervisors of the schoolââ¬â¢s curriculum. Further, every school year is comprised of approximately 180 days where all of these days are allocated with six hours intended for instructional time. From the total of 1,080 hours, approximately eight to ten hours for a stretch of a number of days is required by the FCAT administration which in essence composes less than a percent of the overall time the learner is staying in school annually. While it impacts every public school and nearly all students between Grades 3 to 10, the FCAT is the sole appraisal which is a worthwhile investment for just a fraction of the studentââ¬â¢s time. The SSS was adopted by the State Board of Education as the foundation for public school education and was built up by educators in Florida as well as every school district that examined the SSS prior to being adopted. Moreover, the SSS do not symbolize anything that is atypical in the content of the curriculum. Rather, the Standards are mere statements of what anyone would comprehend as proper things for students to learn and be able to fully grasp. With this, students will be capable of preparing themselves for the test if teachers are also able to give quality instruction in the specific subject they commonly teach. Each question in the FCAT is examined by a pair of community sensitivity reward panels to ensure that the test is not biased against any group or individual. In order to reinforce the attempt to remove any perceived biases in the FCAT, numerous item bias statistical examinations are carried out on every item in the test. It has been observed that a number of students have not showed satisfactory performance in the FCAT no matter what their ethnic backgrounds are. While these students have not yet been able to acquire the needed learning in the aspects of writing and reading as well as mathematical skills, the job of teachers remainsââ¬âto supply every student the chance to learn. The question on the reliability and validity of the FCAT rests on the idea whether the test score of the students are consistent and something which can be rightfully interpreted by individuals. Indeed, the FCAT is able to satisfy both questions primarily because the FCAT is widely monitored for the credibility of its statistics and that the outcomes are elucidated in terms of technical reports. Further, the test nevertheless contains test validity that can be demonstrated in order to be able to provide an interpretation of the scores of every student which indicates the level they have been able to learn the necessary contents of writing, reading, mathematics as well as science. While there are existing FCAT statutes that concern the ââ¬Å"passingâ⬠of students, it does not, however, require the students to pass the FCAT in every grade level in order to be promoted to the proceeding level. On the other hand, the FCAT merely suggests in its statutes that students must be able to pass the test intended for Grade 10 in order to be eligible for a regular diploma in the high school level. The FCAT also suggests in its statutes that Grade 3 students who were not able to exhibit the necessary reading skills must be supplied with extra instructions prior to their promotion to the fourth grade. One crucial aspect in determining the relative performance of students in the FCAT is that the mathematics section of the test computes the knowledge of the students and skills in the context of five fields in mathematics, one of which is Geometry. However, it does not imply nor is it explicitly stated that students are required to have obtained a course in Plane Geometry or other relevant subjects. It merely emphasizes the idea that the FCAT has several questions that concentrate on the concepts of geometry. Inasmuch as the standards set forth in FCAT are applicable to any student who desires to obtain a regular diploma in high school, the FCAT cannot provide differing standards according to the various needs of a multitude of students. Nevertheless, the FCAT holds a combination of items where certain amounts are easy while there are challenging parts as well. As the State Board of Education establishes the passing scores based on the suggestions of the Commissioner of Education, students who take the test are not essentially anticipated to rightfully answer all of the items in the FCAT. The tests intended for Grades 4, 5, 8, and 10 contain items that refer to performance and each of these grade levels contain approximately six to eight of these performance items. Every student is required in the FCAT to supply a written response or at least illustrate a solution to a problem in math. A test support contractor then scores the corresponding responses wherein the answers of every student are graded at various scoring locations across the country. As a means to address the need for people who will score the FCAT, the test support contractor puts advertisements in numerous local newspapers and employs individuals who at least were able to obtain a baccalaureate degree. These individuals are required to partake in a critical training program and pass several qualifying examinations prior to their hiring. The task of the readers is placed under uninterrupted monitoring while they score the responses of the students for the FCAT. (ââ¬Å"FCAT Myths vs. Facts,â⬠2005).
Of mice and men curleyââ¬â¢s wife Essay
Of Mice and Men is a microism of 1930s American society. Following the 1929 Wall Street Crash,, America went into the Great Depression, which lead many Americans to realise that the American Dream was never really possible. We see Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife as a representation of women in America at that time. John Steinbeckââ¬â¢s novella of Mice and Men set in rural California during the Great Depression centres the friendship of two itinerant ranch workers: George Milton and Lennie Small. On arrival at their new employment, George and Lennie meet Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife ââ¬â the flirtatious; pretty; lonely young wife of the Bossââ¬â¢ son, Curley. Many people would argue that yes Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife was a victim, for reasons being: she was forever lonely and unable to talk to other members of the ranch. ââ¬Å"Why canââ¬â¢t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely. â⬠This proves Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife is an outsider like Crooks who is lonely-she just wants somebody to talk to. This picks up the theme of loneliness in the 1930s American society; Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife is not happy living in her father-in-lawââ¬â¢s ranch. She thinks she has missed opportunities by marrying Curley and living with his band of lonely men. She tries to get a bit of companionship by flirting with them and talking to them. Moreover, as she is the only woman on the ranch Steinbeck has portrayed as all women would have been seen in the 1930s American society ââ¬â a sexual object. ââ¬Å"Well, that gloveââ¬â¢s fulla Vaseline. â⬠This shows the readers that Curley is only interested in his wife for the sex. ââ¬Å"Well ââ¬â she got the eye. â⬠This is showing the readers that she has accepted her role as an object of desirable sex. She has been brought into the stereotype that men have women. She could possibly be missing friendship as she is the only women on the ranch. Ultimately, we are invited by Steinbeck to believe that Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife is a victim of society at that time. This is because, eventually she is killed. ââ¬Å"her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck. â⬠This shows she was as helpless as a fish; the use of the simile emphasizes the helplessness she possessed. Furthermore, it also shows how powerless she was as with her name, she and Candyââ¬â¢s dog echo each other, in the sense they both have no names; they are merely, a possession to be owned, an object. Before and after Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife dies we begin to see another side of her, a side just longing for freedom, to be loved, to live the big American Dream. ââ¬Å"She was very pretty and simple, and her face was sweet and young. Now her rouged checks and her reddened lips made her seem alive and sleeping very lightly. The curls, tiny sausages, were spread on the hay behind her head, and her kips were parted. â⬠This shows the readers that all along Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife was a natural beauty behind all the heavy make-up and redness. She has transformed into a beauty by death; she seems to have become an angel. Finally she has found what she has ultimately been looking for: peace and freedom away from her abusive husband and rash mother. However, aside from all this, many people would still see her as not a victim. This is because, she is always described as dressed in red. ââ¬Å"Both men glanced up, for the rectangle of sunshine in the doorway was cut off. A girl was standing there looking in. she had full rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her fingernails were red. Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages. She wore a cotton dress and red mules, on the insteps of which were little bouquets of red ostrich feathers. â⬠Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife is blocking the sunlight. This foreshadows her being involved in a crucial part of the novel. It also forebodes bad happenings involving darkness. Furthermore, the repetition of ââ¬Ëredââ¬â¢ shows she is devilished, lustful and seductive, it also has connotations of danger, foreshadowing danger in the near future involving her. In addition, ââ¬Ëredââ¬â¢ i. e. ââ¬Ëscarlet womenââ¬â¢ indicated loose morals. Moreover, Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife appears as though craving for attention. The make up and high heels seen very inappropriate for a ranch life even for a woman. Furthermore, Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife uses sexuality to draw attention to herself. ââ¬Å"She put her hands behind her back and leaned against the door frame so that her body was thrown forward. â⬠This shows the readers she is a seductive woman who will do anything to get the attention of men. Steinbeck has again used Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife to portray the way in which all women were portrayed as in 1930s America ââ¬â an object of sexual desire. Moreover, it is also showing, that Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife has fully taken on the stereotype of a women only being a sex object be doing so. It also suggests she is very promiscuous -she flirts and uses her sexuality and desirability to get want she wants or rather what she is not getting right now from Curley. What is more, all the readers are fully aware of Lennieââ¬â¢s strength and childlike behaviour; however Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife tries to impress him as he is the only one on the ranch that will talk to her. ââ¬Å"She looked up at Lennie, and she made a small grand gesture with her arm to show that she could act. The fingers trailed after her leading wrist, and her little finger stuck out grandly from the rest. â⬠She tries to draw attention to herself by trying to impress Lennie as her is the only person on the ranch who will talk to her as everybody else is fully aware of what Curley is capable of doing. She wants Lennie to notice her because she knows he is too dumb to say anything to Curley about her talking to other men. Furthermore, many readers would argue she was playing with fire by going after Lennie as he is so strong and powerful and this is backed up when she ironically gets killed by Lennie. To conclude, Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife is seen by men as a strong, powerful woman who cannot be abused, however many would argue she was being sexually abused by Curley. At the same time, all the characters in Of Mice and Men are victims; they all have the big American Dream that never really takes place. In my opinion, Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife is both a victim and a culprit; this is because, towards the beginning of the novella, she is portrayed as a prostitute, danger to be around, however towards the end, we begin to see that all she has ever wanted is the big American Dream. As she is killed at the end, we again see how she is an innocent women longing for freedom and companionship from someone. ââ¬â 1 ââ¬â Show preview only The above preview is unformatted text This student written piece of work is one of many that can be found in our GCSE John Steinbeck section.

Last Child in the Woods Essay
In this article, Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv describes the importance that children have the ability to grow up and experience as their parents did through the back seat of a car. Louvââ¬â¢s purpose is to compel parents to stop giving in to technological advances and to start persuading their children to embrace the world. He uses his personal experiences to convey his point of view and he uses short simple sentences. Throughout the essay he is a strong advocate when making sure children enjoy reality instead of living in this technological age. He most frequently uses short simple sentences. This brevity keeps the audience intrigued and keeps the flow of the piece going. In the article he says, ââ¬Å"The highways edges may not be postcard perfect,â⬠(47-48). Its simplicity makes its understandable to all ages, so itââ¬â¢s relatable by both parents and their children. Its effect on the audience is to try and persuade them to say no to all the technology for their children and to show them what the world has to offer. Louv uses personal experiences from childhood as his second rhetorical strategy. An example from the text is the entire last paragraph when he is talking about all the things he saw from the back seat of his car as a child. Here are a few things he said , ââ¬Å"We saw birds on the wires and combines in the field.â⬠and ââ¬Å"We held our little plastic cars against the glass and [pretended that they, too, were racing towards some unknown destination.â⬠He uses this as to play with the readers emotional side, ethos. The reason behind it is that by play with their emotions it will persuade them to believe that his principles are ethically correct. Louv concludes his article by stating how even though life in the back seat can be boring and mundane; it can also shape us into who we are today.
